History of Cook Elementary

Cook Elementary School opened its doors in 1976 at the base of Fianna Hills, during a time of growth and expansion in the Fort Smith community. From the beginning, Cook was designed as an “open-classroom” school, a new concept that emphasized flexibility, collaboration, and shared learning spaces. Though the model came with challenges, the staff, students, and families of Cook embraced the innovation, setting the stage for a culture of adaptability and excellence.
Over the years, Cook grew alongside the community it served. Additions in 1979 and 1994 expanded the school’s capacity and facilities, reflecting the rapid growth of Fianna Hills families and the school’s commitment to meeting student needs. What began as a small neighborhood school quickly grew into one of the largest elementary schools in Fort Smith, supported by strong leadership, dedicated faculty, and deeply involved parents.
